[News] TV5 lays off around 100 employees

Around 100 regular employees of TV5 are being laid off, sources tell Buhay Media.

Information obtained by the TV5 Employees Union from the network’s Human Resources department indicate 34 assistant cameramen, 8 cameramen and 3 reporters from the News and Information division were fired on Friday (February 24). A total of 98 regular employees of the Kapatid Network were dismissed, including those from the Engineering department.

Sources also told us the employees were not given due notice. Some were called by the HR department, given checks depending on their length of service, and were escorted outside of the premises. Others only learned they were fired when security stopped them from entering the building. Some of them were told the company was losing money and it had to retrench employees.

One story posted online about the recent lay-off from TV5.

Media Newser Philippines obtained a memo from TV5 President and CEO Chot Reyes saying that “despite operating at a financial loss for the past years, the company has exerted all efforts to minimize the effects of the organizational restructuring on our people… As a result of an extensive study, it has become evident that some jobs and skills will no longer be required by the company, while some other positions are deemed overmanned.”

A second wave of lay-offs is expected next week. One source says the next terminations might include those in the supervisory and managerial positions, but it is yet to be confirmed on Monday (February 27).

(UPDATE) Here is the official statement released by the TV5 Employees Union:

MANGGAGAWANG TINANGGAL IBALIK!
SAHOD, TRABAHO AT KARAPATAN IPAGLABAN!
IBALIK ANG FALLEN 98!!!

WATCH: [Video] Axed: The story behind TV5’s mass illegal dismissals

The Talents Association of GMA Network (TAG) condemns this move from the TV5 management, as it violates the basic worker’s rights of these regular employees. Article 283 of the Philippine Labor Code says that employers should serve a written notice to employees and the Department of Labor and Employment at least one month before termination, provided that the cause of termination is allowed by law.

We support any legal moves that will be undertaken by the dismissed employees.

  1. Because your VPs are living luxuriously with addresses at posh subdivisions such as Ayala Heights, travelling first class and staying in the chicest and most expensive hotels, wining and dining in the poshest places in work related travels. Let the lowly workers suffer so that the high and mighty may loftily continue with their lifestyle.

  2. Axe TV5 International marketing executives instead. Poor decisions consisting purely of glamour, glitz and pomposity. There’s no value added there just unexplained expenditures with no tangible return, adding to the burden of TV5 already dwindling resources

Bawasan puros kasosyalan. Mga shows na inoorganize nyo nilalangaw. Pwe!
